Sound Off: Narrow the home search by knowing what you need
Q: How do I determine my housing needs before I begin searching for properties?
A: Before viewing properties, I like to deeply understand how my clients want to live. I like to ask open questions such as:
Describe the qualities of past homes that you would like to have in your new home.
What’s one thing that you will bring from your current home and one thing you will leave behind?
Which rooms do you spend most of your time in and why?
How often do you travel away from home and for how long?
How important is it to be able to walk to shops, cafes and restaurants?
Do you have any hobbies that require additional space?
Have you hosted a party with more than 20 guests in the past few years?
Which holidays are important to you? Do you host gatherings at home or do you go elsewhere?
There is no substitute for viewing properties together with an experienced agent. I don’t care how good 3-D virtual reality technology becomes, a good agent can point out things that a nonprofessional will probably miss.
